Einherjar Kallar, “The Einherjar Call,” is a song sung by the dead. It gives voice to the Einherjar, the fallen warriors chosen for Valhalla, who feast and fight in Odin’s hall through all the ages, waiting for the one battle they were gathered for: Ragnarök, the end of the world. It is a song about death that is not an ending, about wounds carried into eternity, and about an oath that even death cannot break.

This is a war song from beyond the grave, driving and defiant, carried by the voices of men who died and yet march on.

Who Are the Einherjar?

The Einherjar are the spirits of warriors who died bravely in battle and were chosen to enter Valhalla, the great hall of Odin. Their name means roughly “those who fight alone” or “the single fighters,” and they have one purpose above all others: to prepare for Ragnarök.

According to the sources, the Einherjar spend their days in an endless cycle worthy of a warrior’s paradise. Each day they ride out and fight one another in glorious battle, and each evening those who fell are healed, and all return to the hall to feast together on the boar Sæhrímnir and to drink through the night. It is the Norse warrior’s ideal afterlife: eternal combat, eternal feasting, and eternal brotherhood, all in preparation for the final war. Death Is Not the End

The heart of this song is one of the most powerful ideas in the Norse worldview: for a warrior chosen by Odin, death is not an ending but a transformation. “The Einherjar call, no man truly dies. The fallen still live.”

The song’s imagery holds this paradox beautifully. “Wounds on the body, but the spirit is whole.” The Einherjar carry the marks of their deaths, and yet their will and their courage are undiminished. “Fallen men, yet their will is unbroken.” They have died, and yet they walk, feast, and fight. In the Norse vision, to die well in battle was not to be extinguished but to be promoted: taken up into a higher existence, in the company of gods and heroes, with the greatest battle still ahead.

The Feast of Judgment and Fate

The song contains one of its most striking lines: “We do not eat as mortal men do, we feast on judgment and fate.” This lifts the Einherjar above ordinary existence. They are no longer bound by the needs of the living. What sustains them is not mere food but their purpose, their destiny, the weight of what they are waiting for.

This reflects the gravity of their role. The Einherjar are not simply enjoying a reward; they are an army in waiting, gathered by Odin across all the ages of the world for a single reason. “At Odin’s side we stand unbroken.” Every feast, every daily battle, every night in the hall is preparation. They feast on fate itself, because fate is what they exist for.

The Final Host at Ragnarök

The song builds to the purpose behind everything: “The Einherjar call, the final host. At Ragnarök, we stand as one.” This is why Odin gathers the slain. This is why Valhalla exists.

When Ragnarök comes, the Einherjar will march out of Valhalla’s many doors behind Odin to fight in the last battle against the giants and monsters. They are the army the Allfather has spent all of history assembling, warrior by chosen warrior, for the defense of the gods at the end of the world. Even knowing, as the prophecy foretells, that the gods are doomed to fall, the Einherjar march anyway. “Sword and word, never silenced.” Their defiance is total, and it is eternal.
