Surtr’s Flame is the sound of absolute annihilation. It is an epic Viking battle chant sung in Old Norse, embodying the most terrifying moment in Norse mythology: the arrival of the Fire Giant Surtr to end the world.
While other songs celebrate victory or mourn the dead, this track celebrates Ragnarök itself. With thunderous drums, war horns, and chants that mimic the roar of a volcano, it invokes the primal power of Muspelheim, the realm of fire that existed before time began.
Surtr: The Black One
Surtr (meaning “The Black” or “The Swarthy One” due to being charred) is older than Odin. He is the ruler of Muspelheim, the primordial realm of fire located to the South. According to the Völuspá, he stands at the border of his realm with a flaming sword, waiting. He has waited for eons for the signal to march. In Surtr’s Flame, we hear that march begin. He is not a villain in the traditional sense; he is a force of nature, the inevitable cleanser who burns away the old world so that a new one might eventually rise (though few will survive to see it).
The Flaming Sword vs. The God of Peace
The song describes Surtr rising with a “flaming sword” (með loga sverð). This sword is described in the Prose Edda as shining brighter than the sun itself. The tragedy of Ragnarök is that Surtr is destined to fight Freyr, the god of fertility and peace. Freyr will die in this duel because he gave away his own magical sword for love (to marry the giantess Gerðr). Freyr fights bravely with an antler, but he cannot stand against the fire of Surtr. This symbolizes that peace and fertility cannot survive the ultimate destruction.
Ginnungagap Reopened
The lyrics mention: “Ginnungagap opnast víð” (Ginnungagap opens wide). Ginnungagap was the yawning void that existed before creation. By burning the world, Surtr essentially returns the universe to this state of void. The fire consumes Yggdrasil, the oceans boil, and the stars fall from the sky. It is a terrifying reset button. This song captures the majestic horror of the universe collapsing back into nothingness.

Who leads the army of Fire Giants?
Surtr leads the Sons of Muspel (Muspellssynir). When they ride across the Bifröst bridge to attack Asgard, the bridge breaks under their weight because their horses’ hooves are made of fire.
What happens to the world after Surtr burns it?
According to the Völuspá, the destruction is not permanent. After the fire dies down, the earth will rise again from the sea, green and fair. A new generation of gods (the sons of Thor and Odin) will meet, and two humans (Líf and Lífþrasir) will repopulate the world. Surtr’s fire is a cleansing agent.
Does Surtr die at Ragnarök?
The texts are slightly ambiguous, but imply that Surtr survives the battle long enough to cast fire over the whole earth (Surtr fer sunnan með sviga lævi – Surtr moves from the south with the scathe of branches/fire). He is the agent of the end, and likely perishes when the universe collapses into the sea, his purpose fulfilled.
