What Is VALKYRJUSÖNGR?

VALKYRJUSÖNGR (“Song of the Valkyrie”) is a 3:47 Mythic Harmonies composition in stylised Old Norse. A Valkyrie narrates her endless work above battlefields, chooses the slain and reveals the compassion she cannot act upon.

  • Artist: Mythic Harmonies
  • Recording: 3:47, official video released on 20 August 2026
  • Language: stylised Old Norse with English translation
  • Voice: first-person Valkyrie
  • Search identity: compassionate chooser of the slain carrying warriors home

The Song’s Story: The Last Light

The narrator flies above the slain and calls herself the last light a warrior sees. Repetition first makes her certain and ceremonial: she chooses, arrives and carries. The second verse then introduces exhaustion through a thousand winters and a thousand wars.

The third verse provides the emotional turn. She wishes to hold a hand instead of carrying it and to say “live,” but cannot. The refrain changes meaning: home is both comfort and death, while the Valkyrie becomes a road rather than an ending.

Chooser of the Slain in Medieval Sources

The name valkyrja is conventionally connected with choosing the slain. Eddic poetry and Snorri associate Valkyries with battle, Valhalla and service to Odin, while heroic poems give individual figures different voices and relationships.

The song’s first-person interior monologue is modern. Medieval sources do not preserve one Valkyrie confessing this exact compassion after a thousand winters. That psychological continuity belongs to the composition.

Sword in Hand and “Earning” Valhalla

The lyric says she chooses those who earned Valhalla and died with a sword. That is the narrator’s rule inside the song, not a complete doctrine supported by every source. Selection of the slain, other afterlife destinations and the role of battle vary across texts.

The page will therefore avoid telling readers that any armed death automatically guaranteed entry. The phrase is documented as a lyric and interpreted as a modern warrior ideal.

Wings, Clouds and the Road Home

Cloud-flight is common in modern Valkyrie imagery, but wings are not a universal defining feature in medieval descriptions. The official video’s visual world and the lyric use flight cinematically.

For a two-character confrontation, VALKYRJA OK FALLINN owns the warrior’s refusal. Valkyrjur owns the collective figures. VALKYRJUSÖNGR owns the solitary compassionate narrator.

VALKYRJUSÖNGR Lyrics and English Translation

Editorial note: the Old Norse text below preserves the official words released by Mythic Harmonies. It is a modern, stylised lyric, not a quotation from a medieval manuscript or a claimed reconstruction of Viking Age performance.

Old Norse Lyrics

ek flýg yfir valinn
þar sem menn falla ok jörðin rauðnar
ek vel þá sem eiga Valhöll
ek vel þá sem deyja með sverði
augu þeira leita mín
í síðasta andanum
þeir sjá mik koma ór skýjunum
ok þeir vita, þeir vita

ek er valkyrjan
ek er síðasta ljósið sem þú sér
ek er valkyrjan
ek ber þik heim, hermaðr
ek ber þik heim

þúsund vetr hef ek flogit
þúsund stríð hef ek séð
hvert andlit er annað
en augun eru öll hin sömu
þeir segja nafn mitt í dauðanum
þeir kalla mik í blóðinu
ek kømr alltaf
ek kømr alltaf

ek er valkyrjan
ek er síðasta ljósið sem þú sér
ek er valkyrjan
ek ber þik heim, hermaðr
ek ber þik heim

stundum vil ek snerta höndina
ok halda henni, ekki bera hana
stundum vil ek segja, lif
en orðin koma aldri
ek er ekki dauðinn
ek er leiðin heim
ek er ekki endir
ek er byrjunin

ek er valkyrjan
ek er síðasta ljósið sem þú sér
ek er valkyrjan
ek ber þik heim, hermaðr
ek ber þik heim

heim, hermaðr
heim

English Translation

I fly over the slain
where men fall and the earth turns red
I choose those who have earned Valhöll
I choose those who die with a sword
their eyes search for me
in their last breath
they see me coming from the clouds
and they know, they know

I am the Valkyrie
I am the last light you see
I am the Valkyrie
I carry you home, warrior
I carry you home

A thousand winters I have flown
a thousand wars I have seen
every face is different
but the eyes are all the same
they say my name in death
they call me in the blood
I always come
I always come

I am the Valkyrie
I am the last light you see
I am the Valkyrie
I carry you home, warrior
I carry you home

Sometimes I wish to touch the hand
and hold it, not carry it
sometimes I wish to say, live
but the words never come
I am not death
I am the road home
I am not the end
I am the beginning

I am the Valkyrie
I am the last light you see
I am the Valkyrie
I carry you home, warrior
I carry you home

home, warrior
home
